The presentation will begin by reviewing the history of societal perception and treatment of eating disorders, as well as the incidence and severity of the illness. Dr. Weiner will describe the biological, psychological and social etiology and common precipitants of an eating disorder, while identifying similarities and differences with substance abuse. Next, the presentation will outline common substances of abuse in eating disorder patients, and how to identify the abuse through use of historical and collateral information, physical findings, and laboratory tests. Following this discussion, the presentation will review current literature regarding approaches to treatment of co-occurring disorders, and identification of treatment outcomes. The presentation will conclude by discussing a patient case study which illustrates effective treatment of an eating disorder, recurrent major depressive disorder and substance abuse. Upon completion of this session attendees will be able to: TOP | AGENDA Track: Clinical Treatment E02 -The Hidden Dynamics of Addiction 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Johnny Patout, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, CEO, New Beginnings Adolescent Recovery Center Why can two people have different outcomes from the same experimentation with drugs? Why does one person become an addict over another? There are biological, environmental, and psychological factors that impact every person, and being aware of these influences can change everything when it comes to addiction treatment. Upon completion of this session attendees will be able to: Identify the patient and therapist benefits of the online medium and the similarities and differences between the face-to-face and the online settings. Discuss the basic technology involved in online work and ways of handling problems that can arise during online communications. Apply the methodology of secure, Internet transmission of patient – therapist interaction as well as the secure storage and communication of personal medical information. Identify the differences between the DSM-IV and DSM-5 diagnosis and categorization of personality disorders and differentiate between symptoms associated with addiction versus personality disorders. Identify transference and countertransference issues associated with working with persons with co-occurring personality and addiction disorders and methods of using these feelings to help the client. Design integrated treatment plans for persons with co-occurring personality and addiction disorders utilizing real case studies from the presenter as well as their own practice. TOP | AGENDA Track: Clinical Treatment E07 - Novel Drugs of Abuse: Clinical Assessment and Management 2:15 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, Clinical Fellow in Addiction Psychiatry, New York University, School of Medicine John Douglas, MD, MBA, Clinical Fellow in Addiction Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine This workshop will review the recent surge in use of new drugs of abuse, including cathinone derivatives (“bath salts”), synthetic cannabinoids (“K2/Spice”), piperazine derivatives (“legal ecstasy”), methoxetamine (“legal ketamine”), salvia divinorum, and mitragynine (“Kratom”). Over the past few years there has been a rapid proliferation of these novel synthetic psychedelic substances, largely because many go undetected on routine toxicology, and represent an alternative for clients in monitoring programs. The workshop will introduce these drugs’ street names, subjective effects, and physical signs. The role of Internet communications in their production, sale, and promotion will also be emphasized. The presenters will discuss developing a differential diagnosis when intoxication by these agents is clinically suspected in practice. General approaches to managing the effects of acute intoxication by one or more of these substances will be presented. Given the rapid growth in the use of these substances and their increasing appearance in clinical presentations, a review of our current state of knowledge has important implications for educators, clinicians, and policy makers. This workshop will use a real case example of a patient admitted to Bellevue Hospital who used one of these novel drugs of abuse to illustrate clinical assessment and treatment options. Audience members will be invited to participate in a facilitated case discussion and asked to identify the steps of collecting relevant data and select treatment options that support clients' recovery when use of novel drugs of abuse is strongly suspected or confirmed. Upon completion of this session attendees will be able to: Identify the signs and symptoms associated with use of cathinone derivatives, synthetic cannabinoids, piperazine derivatives, methoxetamine, salvia divinorum, mitragynine, and other novel synthetic psychedelic substances. Organize a diagnostic strategy when intoxication is suspected from substance intoxication despite negative toxicology results on routine urine and serum screening. Develop and execute a treatment plan for managing addiction care when use of cathinone derivatives, synthetic cannabinoids, piperazine derivatives, methoxetamine, salvia divinorum, mitragynine, and other emerging drugs of abuse is suspected. Discuss the creation and history of AA and how it is effective in addiction recovery. Discuss how the 12 steps were developed and demonstrate how they affect a person’s life and recovery. Discuss how the creation of AA changed the course of events for treatment and recovery forever. The Italian NERRI team organized an interview with the national newspaper “L’Espresso”.
